THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF TIBETAN MASTIFFS

I DON'T CLAIM TO BE AN EXPERT SO PLEASE CONSIDER THESE DESCRIPTIONS TO BE A BRIEF SUMMARY BASED ON MY EXPERIENCES WITH DIFFERENT CLUBS AND PEOPLE WITHIN THE TIBETAN MASTIFF COMMUNITY. THE PURPOSE IS ONLY TO DESCRIBE MY UNDERSTANDING OF EACH DISTINCT CATEGORY OF TIBETAN MASTIFF, NOT TO TELL YOU WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU.

THE AMERICAN? TIBETAN MASTIFF

I UNDERSTAND THIS TO BE A SCALED DOWN, "DOMESTICATED" VERSION OF THE TIBETAN MASTIFF. IF YOU ARE IN THE MARKET FOR A SMALLER, MORE "DOMESTICATED" DOG; THIS MAY BE SOMETHING FOR YOU TO CONSIDER. ATMA IS THE ACRONYM FOR THE THE "AMERICAN" TIBETAN MASTIFF ASSOCIATION. IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT THIS CLUB HAS BEEN AT ODDS WITH MANY OF THE OLDER BREEDERS FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND; ATMA HAS SCALED DOWN THE SIZE OF THE TIBETAN MASTIFF AND MANY OF IT'S BREEDERS BREED DOGS THAT WILL ALLOW STRANGERS TO ENTER THEIR PROPERTY WITHOUT FEAR. THIS IS WHAT I WOULD DESCRIBE AS A "DOMESTICATED" TIBETAN MASTIFF. IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT A TYPICAL TIBETAN MASTIFF NEEDS TO BE INTRODUCED TO VISITORS AND STRANGERS BEFORE ENTERING "THEIR" PROPERTY. THIS MAY ALSO BE CALLED AN ABORIGINAL? TYPE. IF THIS IS WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR, I WOULD URGE YOU TO CONTACT ATMA.

THE CHINESE TIBETAN MASTIFF

MY UNDERSTANDING OF THE "CHINESE" TYPE OF TIBETAN MASTIFF IS THE TIBETAN MASTIFF THAT IS OFTEN DICPICTED "PHOTOSHOPPED" WITH A MASSIVE RED OR BLACK AND TAN COAT, EXAGGERATED BONE, EYES THAT DROP AND ARE HARD TO SEE FROM, AND DOGS THAT ARE NOT AS AGILE AS THE ABORIGINAL TYPE. I AM OF THE OPINION THAT THESE DOGS WOULD NOT BE PHYSICALLY STRUCTURED TO DO THE JOB THAT A TIBETAN MASTIFF WAS BRED TO DO. I ALSO FEEL THAT THIS TYPE OF DOG HAS BEEN MIXED WITH SEVERAL OTHER BREEDS TO GET "THE LOOK". (I.E. NEOPOLITAN MASTIFF, CHOW, CAUCASIAN MOUNTAIN DOG, ETC.) SO IF YOU WOULD LIKE A BIG "FLASHY", SHOWY, TYPE OF DOG; THIS MAY BE THE CATEGORY FOR YOU. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE "CHINESE" TYPE TEMPERAMENT IS.

THE "TIBETAN MASTIFF" AS I UNDERSTAND IT

I BELIEVE THAT THE TIBETAN MASTIFF LOOKS VERY MUCH LIKE THE "AMERICAN" TIBETAN MASTIFF ONLY LARGER, AND GUARDIER. THEY ARE STILL AGILE, HAVE TIGHT EYES, LONG OR SHORT COATS; BUT IN A LARGER VERSION. I HAVE HAD MEMBERS OF THE "AMERICAN" CLUB EXPRESS THEIR DISATIFACTION WITH DOGS THAT REACH HEIGHTS IN EXCESS OF 30". THE "TIBETAN MASTIFF" MAY HAVE A "GUARDY" OR "WOLFIE" TEMPERAMENT. SCIENTISTS NOW SUSPECT THEY BRED WITH WOLVES IN ORDER TO SURVIVE THE HIGH ALTITUDES THIS WOULD EXPLAIN THEIR TERROTORIAL | PACK INSTINCTS AND ONCE A YEAR ESTRUS. SO IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A GUARDIAN WHO WILL PUT IT'S LIFE ON THE LINE TO PROTECT YOU AND FAMILY THIS CATEGORY OF A "TIBETAN MASTIFF" MAY BE THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU.

WHAT EVER "TYPE" OF TIBETAN MASTIFF YOU GET; I WOULD BE WARY OF THOSE WHO PROMISE YOU THAT EVERY SINGLE PUPPY WILL HAVE THE EXACT TEMPERAMENT OR LOOK YOU ARE LOOKING FOR. TIBETAN MASTIFFS ARE UNIQUE. THEY ARE HIGHLY INTELLIGENT, STUBBORN, AND CAN BE INTIMIDATING. THE TRUTH IS THAT ONE CAN NOT PREDICT WHAT YOU WILL GET. MUCH LIKE HUMANS WHO ARE RAISED IN THE SAME ENVIRONMENT, SOME BEHAVIORS CAN NOT BE EXPLAINED. EVEN WITH TWO HEALTHY, STABLE, PARENTS YOU CANNOT PREDICT ILLNESS OR TEMPERAMENT. A BREEDER CAN SOCIALIZE A PUPPY AND HAND IT OFF TO IT'S OWNER WHERE IT WILL BE EXPOSED TO DIFFERENT SITUATIONS, CHEMICALS, ETC. THE THING I DO KNOW IS THAT IF SOMEONE IS OFFERING SUCH GUARANTEES; I WOULD BE VERY SKEPITAL.
